Should Patients with a Terminal Illness Get a COVID-19 Vaccine?

It’s something approaching a miracle that there are now any effective vaccines at all. We have the world’s leading scientists to thank for this. 

The vaccine rollout gains momentum each day with the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech versions on offer to Americans. Johnson & Johnson is now also on the list. It has been granted emergency use authorization (EUA) for its version of the vaccine.

Understanding the Facts

The virus appeared and spread relatively recently with scientists developing vaccines in record time. Despite the short time-frame, there are some things we know for sure. 

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that increased age equates to higher risk. This could mean serious complications resulting from COVID-19. 

If you have underlying medical conditions, these will make the risks even greater. The CDC recommends vaccines for those people in this category. The exception would be if you’ve had a severe allergic reaction to any ingredients which make up a vaccine.

Vaccines and the Immune System

There are some things we don’t know. For example, if you have a compromised immune system, you may get weakened immune responses to the vaccines. What isn’t clear is the extent to which this may occur.

There‘s little hard evidence yet around the safety of vaccines for those with autoimmune conditions.

It’s Good to Talk

There are other things to consider apart from how safe and effective vaccines are. There are also practical and emotional issues related to each patient and hospice nurse or carer. These might involve the following:

• The care plans of a patient

• The hopes for fulfilling times to come

• Specific aims like holding a new baby or taking part in a marriage celebration

• Getting the most from the time spent with relatives and friends
